"Email address invalid" when trying to send?

If I try to send an email to anyone outside of my contact list I get the message "Invalid email address". Why does this happen when I know the address is valid? I can send email to these same addresses using a different mail account but not with Outlook. What gives?

    To verify that you are using the correct email account settings in Outlook for Mac, you can follow these steps:

    1. Open Outlook for Mac.
    2. Click on the "Outlook" menu in the top left corner of the screen.
    3. Select "Preferences/Settings" from the drop-down menu.
    4. Click on the "Accounts" icon.
    5. Select the email account that you are having issues with.

    Hi, thanks for getting back so quickly, I realized that I am not using the Legacy Mac but the updated version. I appreciate your suggestion to "Check your email account settings. Make sure that your email account is set up correctly in Outlook for Mac and that the outgoing mail server settings are correct.",

    I have looked through all of my various settings, how do I verify I am using the "correct" settings?
