When my computer updated windows and added the new outlook the emails i had in some of my old folders have disappeared. I had folders within the saved mail folder and on changing and updating all folders within the saved mail folder have now disappeared and left a saved mail folder with no folders within it. I need one of the emails that were within the folder for an upcoming court case.

    Hi KennyLABurgess,

Thank you for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.

I realize that after you updated Windows and added a new version of outlook, some of your messages and all the subfolders in the ‘Saved Messages’ folder have disappeared, I'll do my best to help you!

You mentioned that you need the emails in one of the folders for an upcoming court case. I realise that the most important thing is that you need to find your emails, my suggestion is that you can find the original subfolder and the emails in it by switching back to classic outlook. See below for how to switch from new outlook to classic outlook:

Open new outlook, click the ribbon [Help] > [Go to classic Outlook].

After updating Classic Outlook to New Outlook, if you cannot switch back to Classic again, you can try the following actions:

close New Outlook and Classic Outlook

    1. Find this folder path on the C drive: C:\Users*Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\NewOutlookMigration* (Name is the user name of the current system) Quick access method: Win+R, Copy and paste in the run window: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook\NewOutlookMigration
    2. Create a new txt file and name it: handoff.txt (Nothing is needed in the file, it's empty) Then open Classic Outlook and make sure it opens properly.

Thank you for your patience and support. I hope the above information is helpful to you😊. Feel free to let me know how it goes at any time by answering below.

    Best regards

    Hi KennyLABurgess,

Thanks for replying to let me know more about your progress😊

    • What is your email domain name? Is it a Microsoft domain (@outlook.com/@ hotmail.com/@live.com)? Or is it a third-party domain? such as: @gmail.com/@yahoo.com?
    • what is the protocol of choice, exchange, POP, IMAP?
    • Is this email personal or a work/school account?

If you are using a mailbox with a Microsoft domain name:

Generally, outlook data on the web side is a direct reflection of how the data is stored in the server(Sign in to your Microsoft account (live.com)), so, if these emails and folders are present in the web-based outlook, then it means that these emails are still stored in the server and you can export the backup. If you find that there are no emails on the web side (server) either, then you may be experiencing data loss, if you have exported and backed up your emails or files before this, you can download and check.

Thank you for your patience and support.

I wish you all the best
