Unable to open Word Documents from the New Outlook (without saving)

Good day,

I've been troubleshooting this problem since Wednesday (Oct-2-2024).

The issue is when I open an email containing a word and click the open in word button, ms word pops up the following error:

Sorry, we couldn't open

'https://outlook.office.com/owa/wopi/files/ ...."

the rest of the address is a hash of the email that I am signed in with followed by the domain, then some more random numbers and letter then file name I'm trying to open.

For example :

https://outlook.office.com/owa/wopi/files/******@outlook.com/AAMKADJIN215OTgxLTYOM UINGVIMI1hNTg2LTQ2OGZhY2UxMDE0OABGAAAAAACKOWdEB-LNSKZhewS-tw2aBwCpQm HJcgknQq0513tWj-VVAAAAAAEMAACpQmHJcgknQq0513tWj-VVAABISUXSAAABE GAQAEZAIdqGi...

However, when I do the same thing in Outlook (Classic) it works just fine. As in it opens the file in desktop word.

I've cleared the outlook cache, disable add-ins, uninstalled and reinstalled the software. I've tried turning off sync and uninstalling OneDrive. Nothing has worked so far. Also, yes when I save the document and open it, it works but this wasn't necessary before, I could just open the documents without saving it.

A theory I have is that the New Outlook isn't resolving the HTTPS address for the inbox like Classic outlook is.

This problem exist for word docs and excel files but NOT pdfs.

    Dwight, all,

Are you still seeing this issue? The team thinks this should have been resolved by the service change. Just want to double check before I ask for additional escalation assistance.

I recently fixed this issue with my org, except we were undergoing a domain migration.

Maybe this might work for you:

    1. Sign out of all O365 apps
    2. Sign out of O365 work/school account in Settings
    3. Close/exit any O365 app processes
    4. Sign back in

Although I am not certain what kicked in, things were fixed after signing back into O365 and reopening Microsoft Teams.

    Hey Gabriela,

Unfortunately, we ran this command and we are still receiving the same error messages. Please update us ASAP when you have an update from the Outlook team on a potential fix. Thank you!

Is the attachment a Word document or is it a link to OneDrive or something else? If its OneDrive make sure you are signed in to it.

I think the WOPI is the protocol to open the document in Word Online. Are you signed in to Office in your browser? Go to https://www.microsoft365.com/.

Open Word and make sure its set to open In App, Open file links directly in Office desktop apps - Microsoft Support.

If it's a file attachment and not a link when I click to preview it shows that Word Desktop is the default.
