The new mail badge doesn't show up on the Outlook icon any longer. It is now a separate icon in the tray. How can I get it to return to a badge on the Outlook icon?

I was able to fix this issue on my Windows 10 desktop. In the Taskbar settings there is a "Show badges on taskbar buttons" Turning this on solved the issue for me.

    Hello Brian D McCarthy,

    Thank you for your reply,

We are already aware about this issue in window 10 that is why i asked you which window you are using.

We can see that this issue is related to the Windows 10 setting for notification configuration not to Outlook. Troubleshooting your outlook can't change anything we need to adjust some settings in your Windows 10.

Since we are using Windows 11 i can't reproduce the issue in order to check Windows 10 setting. Also, you didn't provide your Outlook version as i asked above.

Microsoft has introduced a new feature called “Taskbar badge notifications” in Anniversary Update which shows small icons or badges on Taskbar buttons of running modern (metro or UWP) apps. These small icons show the number of notifications similar to the notifications count on Action Center’s icon in Taskbar.

For example, if you are running Mail app and have some unread emails, Mail app’s Taskbar button will show the badge on it containing number of unread emails. Similarly if have set an alarm in Alarms & Clock app, the badge on its Taskbar button will show the alarm status. Choose to say you need to check with our windows 10 team via Windows 10 Setup - Microsoft Q&A.

As workaround you can update your window 10 to 11 or you can use some VBA script, you can create a vbs script that called a bash script to notify you or show in the outlook icon however you need to double check the dedicated team as well via Office Development - Microsoft Q&A .

Note: Please some outlook version has a specific support it is important as well to share your outlook version as indicate above

We look forward to your reply. We will continue to assist you based on the information you provide. I sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation.   SincerelyEben Ezer Tres | Microsoft Community Moderator

The issue is not that the envelope will not appear, but that it appears in the tray and not on the actual Outlook icon like it used to.

I have done all of the diagnostic/re[pair steps you cited and still the envelope will not appear on the icon itself, with a red badge indicating the number of unread emails, like it always did until recently.

I am using Windows 10 Enterprise.  Below is a screen shot showing the envelope (circled) on the far right of the tray and not on the Outlook icon.

    Thanks,

    Brian
