why does outlook automatically reset old emails as unread.

I read my emails as soon as they keep coming to my inbox, however, some of the emails are automatically resetting to unread, even many days after I read them. It seems like a follow up alert, where the emails that I have not replied keep marking as unread. I need to get rid of this annoying set up.

After using Outlook for years, I have started having the same issue yesterday only, but already have found a solution for my case. Please read below.

I receive up to 300 emails per day from various clients, therefore I have decided to create folders for each of them.

I have also created rules for each email address, so each received message is moved to the designated folder.

All was OK, until I decided to change the location of the folders I created. I did that by right clicking on the folder and selecting MOVE option.

After doing that Outlook notified me that some rules contain errors that need to be fixed.

I fixed all the errors and right after doing that the messages in those folders of whom the rules contained errors started reappearing as unread.

I deleted each rule that previously contained errors and created them again.

This has solved my problem. Hope this helps.

I have the exact same issue. The issue has been around for years. To bad I have to go to my Apple device to get the Unread status to stick. No issues there - it's the only thing that works.
