How to stop Outlook from jumping to older emails every time I click on unread email?

I started encountering this problem recently. I didn't make any changes that should have prompted this newfound issue. When I click on an unread email (I sort my emails by date, the newest at the top), Outlook will frequently automatically scroll down in my Inbox to older emails (usually to yesterday's or last week's emails). It also happens when I click on an older email after reading a new email. It doesn't do this every time, but I would say it does it more times than not. I searched to see if anyone else had encountered this problem and found a couple of posts. I followed Microsoft's instructions (disabling add-ins, repairing the application, restarting, updating, etc.), and nothing has fixed this issue. This is a super annoying glitch, and I'm tired of constantly scrolling back up in my inbox every time I go through my newer emails.

If it helps or matters, I use Microsoft 365 Apps for Business, Version 2411, Build 16.0.18227.20082. I do not like the new Outlook, so I am using the classic version on my desktop (not web-based). My computer is a Lenovo ThinkPad with Windows 11 Pro, 24H2 version.

I do IT Desktop Support at a hospital, and I have a customer that's having this exact problem. I did everything in this forum and then had them log into a completely different laptop, and it was doing the same thing on the new laptop. So, the problem follows the user, which tells me it's on Microsoft side as well. I went ahead and submitted a ticket to Microsoft Support, and hopefully I hear something back soon. If I get an answer, I will update this thread.

    Hello Eleni,

I have now tried MOST of the things listed.

    • Reset the Current View - Tried, and it did not fix the issue.
    • Clear Outlook's Cache - Didn't try, mostly because I'm honestly unsure of how that works, and I'm terrified of losing data.
    • Turn Off Conversation View - I never had it on. I tried turning it on, and that actually seemed to fix the issue, but conversation view was making it more difficult to do my job, so I turned it off again, and the issue persisted.
    • Repair - This isn't available for me; the option is greyed out.
    • Recreate - I created a new profile. I didn't spend too much time in the new profile. While it seems the issue might've gone away (at least during the 10-ish minutes I was on the new profile), there were other issues with the new profile, such as my informal signature went away and my second mailbox disappeared. So, I needed to switch back, and continued to experience this glitch.
    • Check for Windows Display Scaling Issues - Tried, and it did not fix the issue.
    • Disable Reading Pane Animations - Tried, and it did not fix the issue.
    • Run Outlook in Safe Mode - Tried, and it did not fix the issue.
    • Reinstall Microsoft 365 Apps - I agree with Barry. This is way too extreme when everything else is working fine.

I am disheartened to see so many other people with the exact same issue who are equally unable to find a solution. I would argue that this means the issue is caused by a glitch in Microsoft's software, not ours, and Microsoft needs work on a new update that will squash this bug.

OMG, YES! The new Outlook is horrendous! I tried, too; I stayed on it for about six months and finally went back to the old desktop version.

Nothing worked correctly, and most of the features I used had glitches. I sent several messages to Microsoft about them, and none were ever fixed during the 1/2 year I tried it. I am so happy to be back on the old one, but now I feel like they are causing issues on purpose to entice people to switch to the new version. I wish they would leave things alone until they are 100% on the latest platform. I have enough to do at work than to have our email system slow me down or cause me to have to stop because of issues or something that it will not do.

I have the same issue and tried most of the items on the list and none of the solutions worked.

I have the same questions as Barry.
