How can I make Outlook 2016 find entries, again?

A few days ago, I found that using the search bar in the address book of Outlook 2016 only brings up the response "We couldn't find what you were looking for."

When I try to repair Outlook I get the message, "Setup cannon find Office64.en-us\Setup.xml. Browse to a valid installation source, and then click okay." I'm searching for that file with Agent Ransack and nothing is being found.

Any suggestions for how to repair? Also, I'm assuming I have Classic Outlook for Windows.

Hi, ChrystinP

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I realize that you've encountered a problem when using search function in Outlook 2016.

You can consider rebuilding the index file: In the Outlook application, select File->Options->Search->Index Options button on the right->Advanced->Build.

You can check the Windows Search service: Press Win + R, type services.msc and press Enter; Find the “Windows Search” service and make sure its status is “Running”. If it is not, right-click on it and select “Start”.

For fixing the missing Setup.xml file issue, you can repair Office installation:

  • Open the Control Panel and select Programs and Features.
  • Locate Microsoft Office, right-click and select Change.
  • Select Quick Fix or Online Repair and follow the prompts to complete the repair.

If repairing your Office installation does not work, you may need to manually download the missing Setup.xml file.

In addition, you can create a new Outlook profile, the specific path: Control Panel->Mail->Show Profiles, create a new profile and reconfigure the mailbox. For more details, please refer to: Create an Outlook profile - Microsoft Support

Hope these steps will be helpful! If you need further help, please feel free to let me know.

Best Regards,

Also, just FYI, I also ran the troubleshooter and it indicated that it had fixed "the" problem, but that didn't actually seem to do anything.

Hello, I just found this, apologies for the delay. This problem is still occuring, but now is worse, as currently I get the "We couldn't find what you were looking for." to every search, not just some.

File->Options->Search->Indexing Options button on the right->Advanced->Rebuild.

completed 127,433 items indexed, did twice, first one nada, second one don't know yet, because Outlook won't start and I'm going to have to turn my computer off and see if it will load.

So after indexing twice it now appears to be working fine.
