What is my Outlook SMTP username and password?

I'm trying to setup Scan to Email on my HP printer and I've spent several hours troubleshooting and it always comes back to the same pop up, 'Username or password is incorrect. Ensure both user account and password are valid.'

In the HP Smart app there is a field calling for SMTP Server and SMTP Port. Here's what I entered for those:

SMTP Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com

SMTP Port: 587

There are two more fields that call for 'SMTP User ID' and 'SMTP Password'. I've been entering my outlook email and password for these fields, but it keeps coming back as 'Username or password is incorrect. Ensure both user account and password are valid.' I really have no idea what these username and password fields are referring to, but I recently noticed that HP says that to obtain my 'SMTP information' I have to contact my email provider.

So here I am. Please help :)

I am having the same problem trying to install an Outlook app on my Samsung S23 Ultra. I first used my email account password when asked for an IMAP and SMTP password. Then I used my email address. I still get stuck. Nothing happens. I simply want a reliable email app for my phone. I use Outlook and 365 on my desktop with my Comcast and Gmail accounts. Should I give up on this app or can you give me a SIMPLE solution?

    Thanks.

    Dear Microsoft Support Staff,

I am apparently not the only one with this issue: My HP printer keeps asking for me a SMTP password. As far as I know, I don't have one. Please simply state where we need to go to set/reset the SMTP password. By the way, I am not using the Outlook client.

This really can't be that difficult.

    Dear West Gardner,

    Good day!

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to assist you.

As per the description you have shared, we understand that you have a concern with setting up SMTP.

To better understand the issue and provide possible solution we need more details from you, please kindly provide us the following information. Thank you.

    • May I please confirm if you are using Microsoft 365 business email account (such as ******@compandomain.com), Microsoft Personal account (Outlook.com, hotmail.com or live.com) or third-party email account?
    • May I please confirm if you are using Exchange, IMAP or POP email account?
    • May I please confirm if SMTP is enabled for your mailbox?
    • May I please double confirm if you want to set up SMTP-client submission, SMTP relay or Direct send?

Typically, for SMTP-client submission, we use smtp.office365.com as SMTP server/host. You can refer to the screenshot below.

Therefore, SMTP User ID refers your email address (mailbox), and SMTP Password refers your email address(mailbox) password that you are using for signing into your account.

For SMTP relay, we use yourdomain-com.mail.protection.outlook.com as SMTP server/host. You can refer to the screenshot below.

For direct send, we use contoso-com.mail.protection.outlook.com as SMTP server/host. You can refer to the screenshot below.

So that, you may change your SMTP server/host based on the above example and check if there is any difference.

For additional information, you can refer to How to set up a multifunction device or application to send email using Microsoft 365 or Office 365 | Microsoft Learn

We look forward to your update. Kindly note that the above requested information is required for further analysis and troubleshooting of your situation. Your patience and cooperation are much appreciated.

    Thanks for your precious time.

    Have a nice day!

    Sincerely,

I got a similar issue when trying to add an IMAP email account on New Outlook at my PC. Then I changed back to the "old" Outlook and I could add my IMAP email without any problema.

Hi, is it possible to use a shared mailbox for SMTP? We don't have a password to use though.
