So why isnt there an option because it is one of the biggest pain in the **** in the program

It continually opens up folders you don`t want open so you have to drag the email down over 50 folders to get to the one you manually opened to put it in.

Outlook is getting worse and worse with each update-just about every decent feature has gone, cant set folders in the order you want, cant change the colour of the folders if i wanted something i can`t customise i would go and use a ipad or mac.

    Hi Kurt andrews,

    Thanks for your response.

This is a basic function. Just like you can drag the email by long pressing. So there is no additional customization for it. Of course, you can click the 'help-Feedback' above to give feedback on the function. Help it become better.

There is another supplement to this. Because opening a subfolder requires the pointer to stay for one second before it is completed. Therefore, you can move between folders at will within one second without opening them. Or you can do it in another way. You can right-click the email and use 'Move'. You can select the target location you need to transfer here. You can even search here. This is more convenient for users like you who have many subfolders.

    Hi Kurt andrews,

Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community.

Would like to ask you about 'automatically expanding' in your description. Does it mean subfolders in your mail folder?

If it is about that. My test results here are not quite the same as your description.

While I try to drag the emails. The folder list on the left does not automatically open the subfolders under its folder.

But when you place a message with a dragged message on the folder for a short time. Instead of clicking (because you are dragging the message and can't click), it will open the first level of files under this folder.

This is a normal feature in order to be able to move mail around properly. There is no place to turn it off.

If I have misunderstood your needs. You can reply me and we will discuss your needs.

We look forward to your response.

    Dear Kurt andrews

    Good day!

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Community.

Based on your issue description "How do i stop folders in outlook automatically expanding when you drag a e-mail over them, I only want them to open when i click on the expansion arrow. "

Before moving forward, could you allow me to gather information below to narrow down your specific scenario?

    • May I please know the type of account you are using? Is it an M365 work/school account or a Microsoft/Personal account like Hotmail/outlook.com? If your account is Microsoft personal account (outlook.com/live.com/Hotmail.com), please reply back to us, so we can involve personal account team for further assistance.
    • Please confirm which Outlook application you use (Outlook Desktop, New Outlook, or Web)

To help resolve this, I would like to suggest the following troubleshoot:

    1. to stop expanding for conversations grouped, you can check this option is settings in new outlook. On the Settings page, choose the "Mail" option and then select "Conversation view" under the "Layout" section, and then group into conversations.

for the folders you may check the reading pane in settings, mail, layout, reading pan and arrange it according to how you want.

I hope the above information will be helpful. Please feel free to let me know if you have any other concern or if I get you wrong. Glad to assist you.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation.
