New Outlook & Attachment Preferences I am trying to open an attachment in New Outlook. It originally gave me options as to how I would like to open the attachment as in which program/app (word, excel, Nitro etc) now I do not have the option to change how I would like to open attachments. How can I change this setting?

    Any updates on this?

The moderator previously noted that "The feature opening attachments of all types in their respective desktop app in the new Outlook for Windows is under active development by the team and it was expected to roll out to all users in August 2024 but, by some technical related problems it delayed, so the expected date to rollout to all user extended up to the end of this month (September 2024)."

It's now May 2025, and as far as I can tell, there's still no way to force Outlook attachments to launch in their respective desktop app. The browser version is still very limited (especially in terms of style/formatting control for word docs) and its both frustrating and unnecessarily time consuming to have to launch a file in the browser, then go find it in the 'shared' section of the desktop app manually.

It is June 2025, and New Outlook, which for a while supported opening attachments in the desktop app, has lost this ability again.

Why do Microsoft hate their customers and why do they not care about one of their own most important applications?

Hi, Can we have a status on this upgrade?

I am just starting to use the new Outlook and it seems this feature is still not in place. It is possible I am not looking in the right place.

It will be a deal breaker for my team. We work with Excel a lot and need the files opening in the the desktop version.

    Dear Kulbir Peacock,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community.

I understand your query here and you are absolutely right, in classic outlook you have an option to choose the program/app in which to open the file. However, open file with desktop apps feature is not yet available in the new outlook. However, please note that Microsoft is constantly working on improving their products and adding new features. Therefore, the feature opening attachments of all types in their respective desktop app in the new Outlook for Windows is under active development by the team and it was expected to roll out to all user in August 2024. but , by some technical related problems it delayed, so the expected date to rollout to all user extended up to the end of this month (September 2024). Once this feature starts rolling out to all users, users will have the ability to open attachments in their respective desktop apps/programs as same as classic outlook. Therefore, I suggest keeping an eye on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap | Microsoft 365 and the Microsoft Outlook blog Things to look forward to in the new Outlook for Windows - Microsoft Community Hub for any updates on this feature. In the meantime, I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, if you heavily rely on this feature, you may consider toggling out of the new Outlook for Windows preview for now and observe if this feature rolls out to your tenant until the end of this month.

I will also update here once the feature starts roll out on my side. Appreciate your patience and understanding.

Thank you for your precious time. Have a good day!

    Sincerely,

    Libeamlak | Microsoft Community Moderator
