How can I automatically save unfinished messages as drafts?

Otherwise, what tab replaced File in new Outlook and enables you to perform that same functionality? Outlook hasn't saved my drafts automatically for months, and the online help doesn't provide any assistance - it just began telling me all about keyboard shortcuts, and when it got to saving drafts, it said that drafts are saved "automatically." No they are not, and the instructions don't mention a toggle switch to turn them off/on. That is what I need.

I searched online and was told to set up my drafts in "File>Options," but MIcrosoft took that away. I can't find "Options" either, although when I googled it I found the question "Where do I find Options in Outlook?" from several people, so this is a common problem. Classic functionality went missing and apparently hasn't been replaced, or is now in some non-intuitive place I didn't stumble on. I found something that says "File" was replaced by the Settings icon in the upper right, but Options isn't there.

Could someone please tell me how to set up automatic drafts? Otherwise, I'm probably just going to revert to Classic Outlook. Thank you.

    Dear MaureenGilliland,

Thank you for your response, and I sincerely apologize for the earlier misunderstanding.

Since Outlook Classic is more suitable for your workflow and offers a more familiar interface, switching back to it sounds like a great decision. However, should you need to use Outlook Web in the future, here are a few steps that may help ensure your drafts are saved automatically:

    1. Clear & Reset Browser
Clear your browser’s cache, cookies, and history, especially anything related to Outlook or Office 365, and restart the browser. Alternatively, try using an InPrivate/Incognito window. If auto-save works there, it likely indicates a cache or cookie issue.
    2. Disable Browser Extensions
Temporarily disable all browser extensions (e.g., ad blockers, script blockers). If drafts save correctly afterward, re-enable extensions one by one to identify the cause.
    3. Try a Different Browser
If you usually use Chrome, try Outlook Web in Edge or Firefox. This can help determine if the issue is browser-specific.
    4. Check Security Software
If you use third-party antivirus or internet security software, try disabling it briefly to test draft saving. Please ensure this is done safely and re-enable protection afterward.
    5. Frequent Manual Saves
As shown in the screenshot below, you can manually save your draft by selecting the dropdown next to the discard button and choosing “Save draft.” Drafts are also automatically saved in the Drafts folder on the left panel.

We hope this information is helpful to you. If you have any other concern about this or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to us so we can take a look and keep supporting you.

I don't use the app version of Outlook - I pull it up in a browser, alternating between Chrome and Edge. The last automatic draft was saved in April, so you might think about whatever updates you've had since then, and that will probably be where you find the bug.

I reverted back to Outlook Classic, where I shall remain. I like that design better. Thanks!

    Dear MaureenGilliland,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Support Community. We are happy to assist you.

In the new Outlook experience, the Settings icon (located in the upper-right corner) has replaced much of the functionality that was previously found under the "File" tab. However, not all advanced settings have been carried over, some are currently unavailable in the new Outlook or can only be accessed through Outlook Classic.

Regarding your concern about automatic draft saving, in the new Outlook, drafts are designed to be saved automatically every 30 seconds. Please note that this behavior is not configurable, there is no option to adjust the save interval or to enable/disable the feature. Drafts are always saved to the Drafts folder, and the save location cannot be changed.

If this functionality is not working as expected, it may be due to one of the following:

A bug or sync issue within the new Outlook client
A conflict with installed add-ins or extensions

As a next step, I recommend completely uninstalling and reinstalling the new Outlook to see if the issue persists. This can often resolve underlying glitches or configuration conflicts.

Please let me know if you need assistance with the reinstallation process or if the issue continues afterward. I’ll be happy to help further.

    Best regards,
