administrator permission in Outlook

Long story, sorry.

My PC was not compatible for Windows 11.

Last week i needed to get a new hard drive put in which would allow Win 11.

In doing so, all my data was erased.

I have spent hours loading back on all my Outlook files.

(When Windows 11 was installed, by default NEW Outlook was installed. I have always used Classic and that IS what i wanted, so I have managed to change the Outlook to Classic.)

I don't know if that may be part of the issue? perhaps the administration rights needs to be coded in some way?

Unfortunately what i didn't realise is that all the email folder info would actually go thru Optus Webmail first... completely stopping functionalitiy in Webmail.

I then needed to go into Optus webmail and delete EVER folder and subfolder one by one. (more than 500 items :( )

After more than 5 hours, I have cleared all the folder and sub folder data from Webmail...

I now have all my folder and sub folder information in Outlook (and will actually now do some serious culling! :) )

I CAN send and receive emails via Optus Webmail and Outlook... great...

I CAN MOVE emails from my inbox to any folder in OPTUS WEBMAIL

However, I CANNOT MOVE emails from my inbox to any OUTLOOK folder.

When I try to move an email from OUTLOOK inbox (or any other folder) I get this message:

You do not have permission to move items in this folder. To check permission for the folder RH click folder and then click properties on the short cut menu. See folder owneror your administrator to cjhange properties.

I googled and read and followed the instructions from Microsoft on how to change administrator rights:

I closed Outlook. I held down shift and RH clicked on Outlook button and selected run as administrator.

There has been no change to access, I do not have the admin rights to move folders or emails into folders.

The instructions were very lengthy and used jargon that I did not understand, so perhaps I have not done enough??

PREVIOUSLY, I had permission, I was the administrator, I moved emails regularly, as you do.

Is there an easy to follow instruction that will give me administrator control again in my Outlook folders?

I contated Optus, but because I was able to send and receive emails via webmail which were received in webmail and Outlook, , there was nothing they were able to help me with...

Thank you for your time.

As usual, the Microsoft Community will be my saviour. (I hope).

Thank you for your time.

Don't import - copy the PST from the other computer and open it using File > Open & Export > Outlook data file. Are the folders in it?

If you add a new PST (File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Data file tab > Add) can you move mail into it?

Hi Diane thank you for your advice.

    problem 1:

I followed the link file:///C:/Program%20Files/Microsoft%20Office/root/Office16/SCANPST.EXE (It was exactly where your picture showed, BUT, there was no EXE on the end. I also noticed there was a scnpst.DLL a few lines below your tool.... I dont know what that is for, so ignored it)

I ran the repair tool: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Microsoft%20Office/root/Office16/SCANPS

it found errors. I selected to fix it. There was NO opportunity to run it 3 times because the file area went blank.

I logged back into Outlook 24 Classic and tried to move an email into a folder still the same error message:

You do not have permission to move items in this folder. To check permission for the folder RH click folder and then click properties on the short cut menu. See folder owneror your administrator to cjhange properties. I am UNABLE to move folders

    referring to problem 2:

You said that all folders will have transferred to the Windows 11 HD, BUT ****

I have double checked and there ARE folders missing from the import.

Not sure what i can do about this.

Once again, thank you for your guidance, Diane

This is the path for scanpst if using 64-bit office -

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\SCANPST.EXE

If you have the 32bit version installed, it's

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\SCANPST.EXE

    >>

ALSO, It also seems that not all of the folders from (Outlook 2019) transferred from my old hard drive to my new hard drive.

    >>

Were they in a PST or IMAP data file? If IMAP, did they sync back to the server?

If the folders were in the PST file you copied over, they definitely should be on the new computer.

    Hello Diane.

    Thank you for your time.

I am using Classic Outlook 2024.

I am UNABLE to move any emails to any folder in Outlook.

Try running scanpst on the data file - if it finds errors, ruin it 3 times.
    https://support.microsoft.com/office/repair-out...

I followed these instructions and, there is NO scanpst showing in the Microsoft Office outlook16 in the program files.

ALSO, It also seems that not all of the folders from (Outlook 2019) transferred from my old hard drive to my new hard drive.

When Outlook opened on my new hard drive it was NEW Outlook program, I selected to change to Classic, because that is what I want to use, it has the [removed_js] that i want to use and are familiar with.

I hope you have some other ideas..

    Thank you for your time,

    Lynda

Hi, I'm Diane and I'm happy to help you today.

Folder permissions only apply to Microsoft 365 business accounts, not PST or IMAP folders.

If I'm understanding correctly, you tried to import a PST file into your IMAP account. and now have that mess cleaned up.

Can you move mail to other folders in the pst? Or does that error too?

Try running scanpst on the data file - if it finds errors, ruin it 3 times.

Let me know how it goes, I'm here to help you further if needed.
