Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Dear Gabriel, Thank you for reaching out about this hyperlink behavior in the new Outlook. We understand how important it is to have files open directly in your desktop apps, and we appreciate your patience while this feature is being developed.Current Situation
- The new Outlook for Windows (v1.2025) currently defaults to opening Office 365 files (Word, Excel, PPT) in the browser when clicked.
- Unlike classic Outlook, it does not yet support forcing desktop app openings for SharePoint/Teams links (Open file links directly in Microsoft 365 desktop apps from Teams and classic Outlook - Microsoft Support).
Workarounds to Try Classic Outlook FallbackIf critical for workflow:
- Switch back temporarily to classic Outlook via:
Settings (cogwheel) > "Revert to classic Outlook"
- Configure desktop app defaults in classic Outlook’s:
File > Options > Advanced > "Link Handling" Future Improvement Microsoft is actively developing this feature. Submit feedback via:New Outlook > Help (?) > "Suggest a Feature"
Thank you for understanding as we work to improve the new Outlook experience. Your feedback helps shape future updates, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to share your workflow needs with us. Best Regards,Hoang-D - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
