New Outlook Won't Work with Personal Account

I have tried repeatedly to convert from "old Outlook" to "new Outlook," and it keeps telling me it won't work with personal accounts.

I normally use Roadrunner, and I can't get to any screen on Outlook. I can't even get GMail (which I would prefer not to use) to work.

I have seen others have problems, and have also tried all the things people suggest -- no success.

Very frustrated and disappointed. VERY.

Well understood that Technology is a developing thing..

But where is it written that you must follow the self-harming example of the big brother Boeing?

Like Boeing's newer planes are falling out of the sky and killing people, whereas their classical models like the 747s and 737s, and the 777s are flying perfectly, but in your quest for quick profits, you simply remodelled and introduced the New Outlook without much thought or tests.

I have been suffering the New Outlook for quite some time, and it's not improving - only making things more complicated and eating up our valuable time. Is it a rocket science to understand that you should not play with the settled communication lives of your paid users - we are all happy with classical outlook - it allows woking in harmony - Exchange mails, POP, IMAP, Google etc etc... there is no need to forcibly introduce the New Oulook when it can't perform even 25% of the Classical Outlook - what do you think you are achieving in terms of customer satisfaction? Your new outlook is simply a pain - please withdraw it and remove it from the program so Classical Outlook can work in peace.

    Hello! SteveWolfe1965

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community

I understand how troublesome it can be when technology doesn’t cooperate! Let’s troubleshoot this issue with your personal account in the new Outlook.

    Allow me to ask:

    1. What error message are you getting?
    2. Is this happening to other email address? Or specific email address?
    3. Is this happening to other email client or just specific email client?
    4. May I know how do you access your emails? is it through Outlook.com (web)? Outlook application (included in Microsoft 365 subscription)? New Outlook for Windows? Classic Outlook for Windows (Windows Mail app)? Outlook application for mobiles?
      • What version and edition of Office do you have installed in your device? Example: Personal/Family/Enterprise?
        • You can open any Office apps
        • Go to File > Accounts - on the right side you can see Product Information
    5. May I know if the account is for Work/School use? or Personal (Hotmail/Outlook.com) use?
    6. May I know what email configuration is your email account in Outlook? is it POP/IMAP? Or Microsoft Exchange?
    7. Is this happening to other devices, networks, and browsers?
    8. Can you still sign into your account in the webmail host of your email address?

Here are some steps you can try:

    1. Check Your Account Type:
      • The new Outlook may not allow personal email accounts by default. Make sure you’re using the correct account type.
      • If you’re using a personal Microsoft account, try switching to a work or school account instead.
    2. Repair Your Outlook Account:
      • In the new Outlook, click on File in the top-left corner.
      • Select Info > Account Settings > Account Settings.
      • This repair option can fix broken email accounts and sync issues.
    3. Switch Back to Classic Outlook:
      • If the new Outlook isn’t working for you, consider switching back to the classic version.
      • Turn off the new Outlook by following the steps in the article: Toggling out of the new Outlook for Windows preview.
    4. Uninstall and Reinstall Office:
      • Sometimes a fresh installation can resolve issues.
      • After reinstalling, try adding your personal email account again.
      • Try to uninstall/reinstall the Office.
        1. Go to Start menu > Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
        2. Locate your Microsoft Office and click Modify
        3. Click Uninstall and follow the instructions for uninstalling Office.
        4. Restart your device.
      • To reinstall Office in your device:
        1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/ sign in with your account.
        2. Click the Install button - this should download your Officesetup.exe to your device.
        3. Run the Officesetup.exe
        4. Follow the steps for installing Office in your device.

I have a problem in that I changed my email address and then suddenly couldn't get back in to my classic outlook program. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and I STILL get these error messages in this order:

    1. Outlook cannot logon. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The Microsoft Exchange information service in your profile is missing required information. Modify your profile to ensure that you are using the correct Microsoft Exchange information service.
    2. Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The information store could not be opened.

So I can't even open it to access anything at all inside of it.

    Appreciate help please!

    Regards

    Donna

No, it does not work. I get to the last screen in your post but clicking on anything other than "Cancel" does nothing. It really is not worth the effort to try to make Outlook work. There are much better options out there.

Popping this post up the chain to help more people...

I spent several hours with MS tech support and found an inelegant but workable solution.

The way to get to the IMAP credentials setup is to purposefully error-out of one type of setup so that the prompt for "Advanced settings" is revealed.

On page that prompts you with "Add all your email accounts," look for the small print under the "Suggested accounts" pull down. The prompt reads "No account? and gives a hyperlink to create a new Outlook.com account.

    Image

When the "Create account" menu pops up to create the Outlook.com account, just close the window with the upper right X.

    Image

As it returns to the previous menu with a "Something went wrong..." error message, an "Advanced Setup" button will have been added. DO NOT select CONTINUE! Choose "Advanced Setup" and it will let you configure an IMAP account.

    Image

Then just follow the regular instructions...

Let me know if this works for you.

It worked in accepting my email thanks, but it still refused to send and receive.

So, I stick with my workaround and pay no more money to Microsoft for Office.

Why should I, because the last Outlook that I paid for with 365 they deliberately made unworkable. Once caught, twice shy as they say.
