Hotmail hackers

Over the past few days, I've gotten dozens of security alerts about my Hotmail account. I mainly use Gmail nowadays, and both are set up to receive security alerts for the other. Apparently someone has been trying to guess my password, and was successful in getting the account locked. During this time, I changed my password several times, but after a successful password change, was not able to log in with the new password. I was able to visit https://account.microsoft.com/activity and saw many attempts from all around the world, and two of them (from from outside the USA) were successful. Eventually yesterday I got a "Too Many Requests" error and was told my account was locked - try again tomorrow. So I did. Today I was able to get my password changed (again) and successfully log in. This time, I added 2FA using my Google Authenticator app. Then I went poking around. My Sent folder was empty, which was unexpected. So I concluded that someone had probably sent email from my account, then emptied the Sent folder. Was somebody using my account to spam? After a couple days of being locked out of my account, I'd amassed about 80 messages in the Spam folder. Most were familiar spammers and messages I've seen over and over. But several were errors from Microsoft. Messages FROM me to someone else that had bounced because the inbox was full. They were all to the same address - ******@hotmail.com. The messages didn't seem that big a deal - they were copies of other messages that had landed in my inbox. One was a notice of an update to Reddit's privacy policy, but most were security alerts about the bad login attempts and password changes. Nothing that I'd be worried about anybody seeing. I went looking at the settings, and found a Rule. All my incoming messages were being copied to the address I'd found and another one - *******@hotmail.com. The rule was named idtienphuoc1. No idea what that means. Anyway, I've deleted the rule and feel comfortable that the hacker(s) found nothing useful and any access they may have gotten is now gone. There's really nothing of value in my Hotmail account. But I would like to report these two users.

Hi Lonex, could i add on to this hacker concern, as I was also subjected to this rule named as Idtienphuoc1.

Anyway, in the rule, it stated to forward all my inbox emails to the two following email addresses: "******@hotmail.com"

I have already deleted the rule, and will monitor if it does appear again.

Not sure if possible, but could anything be done to these 2 hotmail accounts, as they are evidently up to no good.

    Thank you.

    Hi GeekinTexas

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear about the security issues you've been experiencing with your Hotmail account. It's great that you were proactive in changing your password and setting up 2FA using Google Authenticator. It's concerning that someone may have accessed your account and set up rules to forward your emails.

To report suspicious activity and users, you can go to the "Recent activity" page on your Microsoft account and select "Secure your account." From there, you can report any unauthorized access or suspicious behavior. Additionally, you can contact Microsoft support for further assistance in investigating and resolving this issue.

It’s great that you caught this before anything truly damaging happened.

Let me know if this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Lonex P.
