Microsoft forcing using new outlook instead of the old and good email app

I've been using the windows email app since Windows 10, and now I'm being forced to use the new Outlook app, which is a bad product. I've tried everything to activate the old email app again, but it forces me to install the new outlook from Microsoft store. I'm talking about the free version, not the Office 365 version.

The new outlook have SMTP problems every time, and can only store 3 months of emails. I mean, why? Why downgrade mail functionality in windows? In the old windows email app, I could download to local storage my lifetime inbox, and with this new outlook, I only can store 3 months.

I need a guide of how to deactivate the new Outlook email, and reactive the old email app from Windows 10 and 11.

    Hello,

You're much more an Outlook "Power" used than I am. Even during my corporate days, I tried to keep it simple. My focus was on coding / testing. I used various options only when I needed them. Sending / receiving emails and using Calendar for bookings was pretty much all I needed in Outlook. Keep checking Proton, they add features occasionally. What they add is partially driven by the usser community. Proton asks the community what they would like to see. Proton has every thing I need. I have a Proton subscription. The other apps are worth looking into. Most importantly, Proton is very private. The "Five Eyes" or anybody can not "see" your emails / data. Proton can import from most Email services.

I have both Outlooks on my PC. I have no problems accessing the classic Outlook. The classic Outlook is the desktop app from Microsoft 365. the new Outlook is a disguised app. It redirects to the online Outlook, which is the new Outloook.

Microsoft seems to be transitioning uses into two groups, public and corporate. The public will be getting the new Outlook (Mail, Calendar, ToDo etc. and redirects to the online versions of Excel, Word etc.). Which all use OneDrive. Get ready to buy more OneDrive space. You can also have a Microsoft 365 subcription which also give you access to the desktop apps. With the free online versions, I don't know if it will continue to be an option for the Public users. For me this is a potential problem. I use MS Access. It is only available as a desktop app. If you have Windows (Home), you're most likely falling into this category. The corporate groups usually have a paid version of Microsoft 365 and therefore will have the local desktop apps with the 365 look.

I think we're kindred souls. I started programming on the B3500, H200 and IBM 360/40 - the Burroughs was the hands-down winner but IBM had better marketing. I've been considering Proton Mail but wonder about several things I depend upon in Outlook:

    • I use 'views' in Contacts to generate my Xmas card lists. I haven't seen that in any other email system
    • I can add fields or use a large number of optional fields, like 'Children's names'. Gmail allows a field like this to be created but only on a record-by-record basis.
    • I use CompanionLink to synch calendars and contacts between my Android phone and Outlook. I've used it for years and it works particularly well. I use K9-Mail on the Android.
    • I have a private domain with 2 users and we both have multiple email addresses (personal mail, business mail, shopping, etc.)
    • I use IMAP on all devices and depend on S-MIME to handle attachments well.
    • If there was one thing I could change about Outlook, it would be those damned pst files that corrupt and lose data.

I've also considered Mozilla but it seems their development and support is hit or miss. I wish Siren Mail or Eudora were still around but Google killed them. I'd be interested in your opinions. If you would like to email me, I'm using a Mozilla mask that I can kill once I receive your reply. It's ******@mozmail.com. If you want to correspond, I'll send you my real email address.
