Why can't I make changes to a Distribution List that I am an Owner?

I have recently started using new Outlook since we will be required to use it when they update our equipment later this year. I tried to update a distribution list which shows me as an Owner, but there is not option for me to add or remove members. When I right click on the name of the distribution list, there is an option "Add to List: but is greyed out. There is not option to edit members, etc.

I have the exact same problem.

I work as IT, my users asked me why they couldn't change member lists of their distribution lists where there are owners anymore.
After diagnostic I can confirm that to this date there is no option for distribution lists owners to edit member lists.
The only way to edit member list is via Exchange Admin Center. This was not the case before...

    Regards,
    Matt

Thanks for the information Microsoft Agent, however the online version using Manage via Outlook on the Web (OWA) - (Your Most Likely Solution) is not supported or at least I don't see that option.

Here is another one I am using that will help - that is online and shows DLs that you belon to and DL that you own, it's refer to groups but that is DLs

Exchange admin center - this url is https://admin.exchange.microsoft.com/?page=groups&form=owa_groups#/

    Hi Courtney,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

The reason you likely can’t manage a Distribution List (DL) you own in the new Outlook is that New Outlook (and Outlook on the Web) primarily supports managing personal Contact Groups, but organization-wide Distribution Lists (or Distribution Groups) are managed centrally via the Exchange/Microsoft 365 Admin Center. The new Outlook client offers a streamlined experience but defers full DL management to the admin portals, even for owners.

Here are your best options to manage the DL:

1.Access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center / Exchange Admin Center (If you have Admin Privileges):

    • If you also have Global Administrator or Exchange Administrator roles in your Microsoft 365 tenant (unlikely if you're just a DL owner, but worth mentioning), this is the definitive place to manage it.
    • Go to admin.microsoft.com or admin.exchange.microsoft.com.
    • Navigate to Teams & groups > Active teams & groups > Distribution lists.
    • Find your DL, click on it, and you'll find options to manage members, owners, settings, etc.

2.Manage via Outlook on the Web (OWA) - (Your Most Likely Solution):

    • Often, the Outlook Web App (OWA) provides more management options for Distribution Groups for owners than the New Outlook desktop client does.
    • Go to outlook.office.com and log in with your corporate account.
    • Navigate to the People icon (or Contacts section).
    • In the left pane, look for "Distribution lists I own" or similar (sometimes under "Groups" or "Directory").
    • Select the Distribution List. You should see an "Edit" option or similar, which allows you to add or remove members.
    • Note: The exact steps in OWA can vary slightly depending on your organization's Exchange version (on-premise vs. Exchange Online) and specific configurations.

3.Use Classic Outlook Desktop (If you still have access):

    • Since you're still able to use Classic Outlook before the update, this is your immediate workaround.
    • In Classic Outlook, go to the Address Book.
    • Find the Distribution List.
    • You should have options to "Modify Members..." or similar when you select or right-click the DL.
    • This confirms that the permissions are valid; it's the New Outlook client's interface that's limiting you.

    4.Contact Your IT Administrator:

    • If OWA doesn't give you the options you need, or if you prefer, your IT administrator can easily manage the Distribution List for you in the Exchange Admin Center.
    • They can also confirm if there's any specific policy or configuration preventing owners from managing groups through the client in your environment.

If none of the above solutions work, let me know for further investigation. Please note that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.
    Kind regards,
