I try to open a word document and Windows installer pops up but it never finishes.  It gives error message as in my earlier request for help.  Do I need to uninstall or reinstall XP or windows installer and will I lose my documents that I now cannot open.  I used this for several years and I do have all the updates.  My system does it automatically.  Thank you.

Check for multiple version of Office program under Start-> control panel-> add or remove programs. If you have any lower version Office programs like Office 2000 or Office XP, uninstall the programs from the list. Then restart the computer and try to open the word document. If you still have the same issue, remove and reinstall Office 2003 from the disk.

When you uninstall and reinstall Office 2003, the data and documents saved on the computer will be safe because they are saved on the hard disk.

Refer to the link to remove earlier versions of Office using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:-

Note: Make sure you have the disk for Office 2003 before you uninstall any program.

"Why does Windows installer pop up when I try to open a MS OFFICE 2010 products?"

I HAVE THE ANSWER TO THIS AFTER WEEKS OF TROUBLESHOOTING.  After repairing and uninstalling repeatedly, a microsoft guy from India fixed this problem for me, but I believe you could do this yourself:

Download this program from microsoft and install it "SubInACL (SubInACL.exe)"

    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=23510

This is the only thing that worked.  It takes a while to go through all the files and reconfigures stuff.  Anyway, it worked!  NO MORE INSTALLER POPPING UP!!!!!!

My problem was an apparent lingering of Office 2007 that was still lurking on my machine.

    Good luck!!!!

If you log in as Administrator, does that allow the installation to complete properly?
