List of Figures/List of Tables do not update

If anyone has seen this or knows how to correct the problem, please help.  This is Word 2003 in Office 2003 XP. I am working on setting up a user group master template that has a short fuse.

While adding the List of Figures and List of Tables for the document, I noticed an anomaly which I have not seen before and need to straighten out.  I am and have always used either Words built-in styles or custom styles based on the default styles.  This particular document is using all customizations on the default styles. My setup  for both of the lists is as follows:

<!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt; mso-header-margin:36.0pt; mso-footer-margin:36.0pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} -->

Insert Reference – Index and Tables – Table of Figures tab –  Show page numbers = checked -  Right align page numbers = checked – Tab leader= selected – Formats: = From template and Caption = Figure

Under Options –  Style = checked  - From dropdown my style "Caption – Figure" = selected - OK

While testing the document I noted that when adding or removing a figure to see if the List of Figures updated properly, the listing would not update unless I highlighted the list, right clicked and selected 'edit'.  While moving thru and checking the selections made in setting up the list, I noticed that under 'Options', the Style was deselected and 'Bubble text" was the style highlighted in the dropdown.  When I re-selected my "Caption - Figure, clicked on Style and OK to close the window. The caption block at the bottom of the window, which previously said "Figure", now said (None). When I close out all the List of Figures windows, a pop up asks if I want to replace the existing list.  When I accept, the list is updated.  If I add or remove another figure to test the listing, it keep reverting back to style 'bubble text' and the listing will not update normally  even if I Shift F9 multiple times.

Has anyone seen this before and how do I get rid of it.  I have created a limited custom style list and 'bubble text' is not one of the styles.  I'm not sure that it is even a default Word style.  Does anyone have any ideas!

As always - help, answers, suggestions and really good hints are appreciated.  Lenny33

    What happens if you just select the Table and press F9?

    Just clicking F9 won't update everything unless you first Select All (Ctrl+A). Note also that if you are inserting a default TOF, there will be nothing selected in the Options dialog. The style shown in the style dialog will be Normal, but the Style box will not be checked. You have already told Word to look for your Figure caption labels (those with { SEQ Figure } fields), and you actually don't want it to pick up ALL paragraphs in Caption style, do you?

    Are you inserting new captions using Insert | Reference | Caption? Just typing a new caption in the Caption style will NOT work with this type of TOF.

    Hey Doug -

    If I just click in the list and press F9, nothing happens.  I spent some time with a Microsoft resource manual last night and it seems that pressing F9 should update all the fields without actually having to be inside.... but at this point, I have clicked in, highlighted, clicked beside and around and not had success. The screen will refresh, but the field will not update and bring in the additional entries or delete an entry.  What's puzzling, is that the 'style' under the Options button is keeps reverting to 'bubble text'.

    I'm wondering if I should try reconstructing in a clean new file.  Could the issue be something going on with the template itself?  Sorry, but I'm grasping at straws at this point.

    Thanks - good to hear from you.
