How do I get number of lines of text to show up in my document?

Hi,

I just upgraded to Office '07, and I'm a little confused about something in Word. In the previous version, the number of lines per page in my document showed up in the lower toolbar. In this version, I get "page" and "word  count", but no number and total of lines per page.  I didn't turn the line markings on due to the fact I'm working on a book, not a legal document.

Is there a way to make the lines per page (and which line I clicked on, for instance, line 12 of 25,) show up in that lower tool bar? Thank you.

Julie

Right click on the status bar at the bottom in word and then click on ‘Line Number’. Now, this would give you the line number at the bottom but it’ll not be in the format of ‘Line X of Y’.

This actually would let you know the current position of the cursor in the document. The display of the indicator cannot be changed.

    Hi Julie,

I don't know if there is a way to change the display of the indicator on the toolbar but there are two quick(ish) alternatives:

Count document lines via Word Count

    1. Go to the Review tab
    2. Click on Word Count in the Proofing category
    3. Check the statistics, they include the number of lines. However, it is the number of lines for the document.

Count the number of lines for a page

    1. Place your cursor on the last line of the page
    2. Right click on the indicator at the bottom of the page and you will see Line number in the category at the top of the list.

Neither is exactly what you want but I hope it helps a little. If there is a way to change the indicator I am sure someone will respond.

Excuse me Doug., but the total number of lines WAS displayed on the status bar in Word 2007 until recently.  I used this every month with a certain customer of mine.  I now have to go to the Word Count Box to find out how many lines I have highlighted, and this is very annoying as well as time consuming.  Microsoft needs to get off it's high horse and put this back, not say that it was never done nd they can't do it.  IT WAS AND THEY CAN.

The answers to this question are not what is needed.  In the past I was able to highlight a certain number of lines in a document and the status bar would tell me how many lines were highlighted.  However, since the last update I have not been able to do this.  Knowing the line NUMBER does me no good when I want to know how many lines in a certain paragraph within a page.  This program used to do that and should still be able to do so.  I think the programmers went in and made changes that stopped this from happening.  I know you can open the Word Count box to do this, but if I am looking at several paragraphs in the document, that is truly time consuming and unnecessary.  Things such as this that are working fine should not be tampered with.  Hopefully this will get back to the programmers and they will come up with a solution to the problem.

    Hi Sharon,

I know this is just nuts, but the number of lines per page used to show up in the bottom toolbar. I don't understand why that doesn't happen anymore, and wonder if it's something I did wrong when I formatted my book.

Thank you for the help! I'll keep trying.

    Julie
