How do I get number of lines of text to show up in my document?

Hi,

I just upgraded to Office '07, and I'm a little confused about something in Word. In the previous version, the number of lines per page in my document showed up in the lower toolbar. In this version, I get "page" and "word  count", but no number and total of lines per page.  I didn't turn the line markings on due to the fact I'm working on a book, not a legal document.

Is there a way to make the lines per page (and which line I clicked on, for instance, line 12 of 25,) show up in that lower tool bar? Thank you.

Julie

Right click on the status bar at the bottom in word and then click on ‘Line Number’. Now, this would give you the line number at the bottom but it’ll not be in the format of ‘Line X of Y’.

This actually would let you know the current position of the cursor in the document. The display of the indicator cannot be changed.

    Hi Julie,

I don't know if there is a way to change the display of the indicator on the toolbar but there are two quick(ish) alternatives:

Count document lines via Word Count

    1. Go to the Review tab
    2. Click on Word Count in the Proofing category
    3. Check the statistics, they include the number of lines. However, it is the number of lines for the document.

Count the number of lines for a page

    1. Place your cursor on the last line of the page
    2. Right click on the indicator at the bottom of the page and you will see Line number in the category at the top of the list.

Neither is exactly what you want but I hope it helps a little. If there is a way to change the indicator I am sure someone will respond.

    Hi again Julie,

Perfectly OK to click the little green button, that's good if the response was helpful but didn't answer the question. (I think visitors to the forum are comforted by the assessment of others) so ... thanks!

A trick that would work for you concerning the seven blank rows at the top is to click in the first line of text and setting a very large spacing above:

    1. Right click on the first line/paragraph on the page
    2. Choose Paragraph... from the pop-up menu

Change the setting in the Before: box under Spacing to something huge, such as 120pt.

    >>> That will get you the blank space you need at the top of the page without actually adding blank lines that will be added to your line count.

** BTW. You probably know this already but, for the benefit of future browsers of this thread, I should mention that if you do the huge space thing, you should do it only after typing more than one paragraph, otherwise the huge space will be carried over to subsequent paragraphs.

    How does that sound? "Where there's a will there's a way!"   :-)

    Best,

    Sharon

    Sharon,

Publisher standard (at least here,) is double-spaced, 25 lines a page. That's doable, but I typically start my page seven lines down. I can count the times I hit "Enter", but it would be nice to verify it with the former line in the bottom taskbar, too.

Thank you again. I hope it's okay to hit the little "green button" anyway!

    Hi Julie,

No, it's not you. The button changed with the release of Office 2007. Unless one of the Microsoft support people/MVPs lurking around this site has a trick to modifying the button I think we are stuck with this new one.

I used to like the old feature too.
