Changing the background of a single slide

In some PP 2007 themes I was able to change the background of individual slides within a presentation without applying the change to all other slides.  I'm trying to do this is one now, and it won't let me.

I also miss all the old template selections in earlier PP versions.  Mostly for that reason, I don't really like PP 2007. The "themes" are boring.

    To change the background of an individual slide:

    1. Make sure you are on the slide for which you want to change the background.
    2. Access the Design tab of the Ribbon, and click Background Styles.
    3. This opens the Background Styles gallery -- click the second from bottom option called Format Background.
    4. This opens a dialog of the same name -- change the background through the Fill or Picture tab.
    5. Don't click the Apply to All button -- there's no Apply button in PowerPoint 2007 -- just click the Close button.

    This changes the background of the active slide only.

    To get the default background back:

    1. Make sure you are on the slide which does not have the default background -- since you or someone else changed it earlier.
    2. Access the Design tab of the Ribbon, and click Background Styles.
    3. This opens the Background Styles gallery -- click the last from bottom option called Reset Slide Background.

    If you right click a design / background style you can apply to selected slides only

    i applied washout on the image background of a slide but when i save the presentation, closed and opened it again my changes weren't saved. do you know why? can you help?
