Can't open xlsx file with Excel 2000

Hello:

I cannot open an .xlsx file that I received and that was created with Excel 2007.

I reinstalled the newly downloaded converter FileFormatConverters.exe before I tried to open the xlsx file.

I use Excel 2000.

I have set the "Open With" (default) to Excel 2000.

(I have set "Open With" (default) to MS Word 2000, and have no problems

opening docx files.)

Would anyone have any suggestion about why I cannot open xlsx files? I

get "File is not in a recognizable format" error message, I press "OK", and I see garbage.

Regards,

Hans L

The only solution I have found is to use openoffice calc.

It seems crazy to use a competitors product to convert xlsx files to xls, but it works.

You can download the suite free from openoffice.org

I only use excel because I know all the macros work in that ...

Were you ever able to open that xlsx file? I am running Excel 2000 on a Windows 7 machine and have tried the FileFormatConverter.exe twice, including after a restart. Still not having any success.

Yes, I have tried to open the file both from within Excell and by double clicking on the file in Windows Explorer.

    Any help will be appreciated.

I had the same problem using Excel 2000 after installing FileFormatConverters, and by pure accident, discovered that the xlsx files won't open from inside Excel like the docx files do in Word, but they *will* open if you double-click (or right-click and pick 'open') because they don't open using Excel, they open using the Microsoft Open XML Converter program!!!!

This is the kind of thing that one would expect to have MENTIONED somewhere in the documentation. This is why I'm cynical...

    Anyhow, problem solved.

What part of "I reinstalled the newly downloaded converter FileFormatConverters.exe before I tried to open the xlsx file" did you not understand? Linking to this exact download does not help at all, and makes me think you did not read the whole message here. The problem is still exactly as described above. Hans L clearly described everything he had already tried, and you replied with a solution he already noted. NOT HELPFUL. PROBLEM PERSISTS.
