I have just installed Windows 7 and then Office 2007. However, when I try and check the spelling of a word document or Excel worksheet, the Spell Check is ignoring errors. The thesauras works.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Len

Possible answers cobbed from other sources:

    1. First you need to open a Microsoft Word document
    2. Click the MOB (Microsoft Office Button) at the top left corner
    3. At the bottom of that menu is a button labeled "Word Options" (it's next to "Exit Word")
    4. On the left side is a list. Click "Add-Ins"
    5. At the bottom of this menu there is a small box next to the word Manage
    6. Click that box and select "Disabled Items" from the list
    7. Once you have selected this click the "Go" next to it
    8. A new window will open and if on of the options has the words "Spell Check" then select this
    9. Once the option is selected then proceed with clicking Enable.
    10. Close the "Word Options" menu and proceed to type an obvious misspelled word to test it.

In Outlook, launch a new message.

Go to Proofing > Spelling dropdown > Set Language

Ensure the Do not check spelling or grammar box is UNCHECKED.

    Click Start

    Click Control Panel

Click Date, Time, Language and Regional Options

    Click Regional and Language options

Go through all the options and set everything to [appropriate language]

You may have to add the Irish language in one of the options, if so add it and delete the other one

If there are two languages installed delete the non [appropriate language].

    1. Delete uproof folder from %appdata%\Microsoft.
    2. Click on Start > Run and type regedit
    3. Expand the folder HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing

    Tools\1.0\Override\en-US

    1. Rename the String Values DLL and LEX to oldDLL and oldLEX
    2. Close the registry editor and check the issue

I hope one of these works for you.

    ..why.. of all stupid...

The answer for my problem, the spell checker not working although all proofing tools were installed, no items were found in the above mentioned "Disabled Items"-list, and the also mentioned reg-key did not exist:

    1. In the status bar at the bottom of the word window there is a button showing the current selected language: -> Press this button...
    2. Then the dialog box for languages shows. Here you make sure that the checkbox "Do not control spelling or grammar" is not selected ...
    3. Press the button "Standard..." -> confirm with "Yes".
    4. Press "Ok" for closing the language dialog box.

    ...problem solved ! ;)

Hope this is of any help for you to!

Have you tried repairing Microsoft Office 2007? Click Start, type: Programs and features

    Select Microsoft Office

Click Uninstall/Change on the Command Bar

Select Repair in the Office wizard.

Also, click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office 2007 Language Settings

Make sure enabled languages for editing and selected.

    Thanks Andre.

I ran the repair and unfortunately that did not fix the problem.

The enabled language setting looks OK.

However, I then created a new user account and the spell checker works in the new account! (I am using Home Premium Windows 7).

I guess that implies there is some setting(s) in the original account that is wrong?

Anyway, rather than mess with the old, I think I will just use the new user account.

One thing, is there an easy way to copy all my settings from the old account to the new (email accounts, favorites, personalized display settings, etc.)? Or, can I create a new one based on the old (without, hopefully, bringing in the spell check error.)

    Thanks again.

    Len
