Editing and displaying live on a second (display) monitor - version differences?

I can do the following using PowerPoint 2003* and Windows XP Medie Center Edition SP 3.  It seems that I can't do it using PowerPoint 2010 and Windows 7 Ultimate.

There are obviously multiple envrionmental differences (the above, plus different hardware).

Can someone tell me whether the behaviour is known to be due to software, and maybe if there's a fix?

Using dual monitors with desktop extended onto the second, I have a PowerPoint file open on a slide in Edit view.  I also have a show on the same file running under Presenter View.   I use Presenter View to set the projected display to the slide being edited.  I switch to the regular PowerPoint instance and can edit text, move shapes etc.  The display shows the text as it's being entered, and the shapes when they have landed in their new position, without showing other aspects of the editing interface.

I don't seem to be able to do this in the Windows 7 context I've described.  I know the program icons are different, and now harder to distinguish, but it's more than just that.

Thanks

David

*I could test this in PowerPoint 2007, and may post my findings on this.

OK, this is what I get:

    PPT 2010 on Windows 7.

PPT in edit mode on screen 1 (laptop). Presenter view set to display on screen 2 (a monitor as it happens, but could be projector).

Start presentation. I now have my presenter screen on 1, displayed show on 2

I alt-tab back to edit screen.

I move a shape and see it move on screen 2 (once I let go)

I delete some text and see it delete on screen 2 (all at once if I select a word then delete, or character by character using backspace)

    Typing text also appears.

So, it sounds like I can do what you are trying to do.

Just to be awkward, I also tried it with the screens swapped, ie trying to edit on the same screen as the show (maximised or in a window). Now when I edit, I DON'T see changes in the "presenter" view (even though they update in the show I can see behind my edit window) until I switch back to the show, when it redraws the presenter screen too. Basically it looks like the presenter screen is only redrawn when it has focus, whereas the show screen updates in real time regardless.

Also, don't get bogged down with presenter view if you don't need to - you can still choose which display to have the show on even with presenter view turned off, if this makes it easier to manage your editing on one screen and show on the other.

Hope this helps, even if only by giving you another set of results to compare to.

It all seems to behave the same with Presenter View on or off, the point is though that the Presenter View window does not update in synch with your changes, whereas the main slide show does.

Very helpful!  Thank you!  Next time I'm at the site, I'll rehearse the steps again.

Presenter View would be useful for parts of the session, but not at the point we're describing.  Unfortunately, it seems that to close it and reopen smoothly without it is a chore.

Also, with my slideshow set to a separate monitor, I get a persisent 'slideshow' window in the taskbar of my primary monitor that I can only control 'blind'.   By 'blind', I mean I can navigate using nativation keys, if I select the "PowerPoint Slide Show ..." window in the task bar.  Other than that, it is locked minimised on the task bar.  It obeys SlideShow commands (<slide#><enter>, "B", arrows, etc.), but the interface is missing.  I suppose this makes sense.  Everything's the same except the window that shows Presenter View.

At present, I'm using Presenter View (or the Slide Show task) to 'refresh' (and in fact activate!) more complex objects (like an HTML-based marquee I've got).  To do that I currently travel away from and back to the slide.  Which can be done 'blind' as described above.  But that's a kludge anyway that I should ask further about in a new post.
