Spell check in Word marking certain correct words as incorrect (there, were, forward) I've checked all the language settings already

I've checked all the language settings already. When I run spell check, it will allow me to skip these words if I hit "ignore once" but NOT "ignore all". These words are not in Auto correct or exclusion dictionary. This is weird!!!! and making it hard to work!! Has been going on now for months.

I wonder if you have an add-in with Word that is blocking the 1033 (US English) version for spelling.  I know that if you have a 3rd party dictionary app installed upon Office installed, sometimes, the dictionary can be disabled.

Try reproducing this in safe mode - Start/Run (or Search) and type this in:

    winword.exe /a

Then try to reproduce the issue.  If it still happens, it's not likely an addin.  If it does work, then you have an add-in conflict.

My bad. I overlooked that you said "When I run spell check." I never do that; I use only "Check spelling as you type," which adds the wavy underlines--red for spelling, green for grammar (though I don't use that), and blue for contextual spelling.

Contextual spell check can tell when you've used "there" when you meant "they're," "were" when you meant "we're"--that sort of thing.

In this case, however, I wonder if there is a language issue. Select only the word that is marked as misspelled, go to Review | Proofing | Set Language, and see what language is selected for the word. Or (a little simpler) try selecting the word or paragraph and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar to remove any direct font formatting (which includes language). I'm not really impressed with the logic of this suggestion since Word should be using the proofing tools of whatever language is applied (unless it doesn't have proofing tools for that language), but it's worth investigating, anyway.

hmm. what is contextual spell check? I'm talking about that happens when I hit "Review" "Spelling & Grammar"(with "check grammar" NOT checked.) Thanks.    Fairhope? I've spent a good deal of my life near Foley! (Grandmother from there.)

It's definitely spell check and not grammar check or contextual spell check?

weird. I modified my "normal" formatting to British English and the problems went away. But now, I'll be misspelling colour....
