Ctrl-g function suddenly not working

Hi all,

I have always been able to use the ctrl-g function in Word 2003, but yesterday it stopped working and I can't figure out why.  Can someone help me re-enable it?  When I press ctrl-g now, the cursor turns to thinking mode for about half a second, then returns to normal, but nothing happens.

Help!!!

Many thanks,

Alison

Okay, this is very mysterious. I would suggest that you start Word in Office Safe Mode: quit Word and restart it pressing Ctrl while Word loads. If you are able to use the GoTo shortcut keys normally in this mode, then have a look at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm for some troubleshooting suggestions. A badly written add-in is the most likely culprit.

Ctrl-g is still assigned, as is F5.  But when I press F5 it does the same thing - thinks for half a second then does nothing.  Also, when I press either ctrl-g or F5, all the buttons on the toolbar become 'grey' and I'm unable to use any of them.  To undo this effect I just click anywhere else to reverse this.  Not sure if this temporary 'greying' of the toolbar buttons is a clue??

    Any ideas?

    Much appreciated.

    Alison

Double-click on a toolbar to open the Customize dialog and then click Keyboard... Select Edit under Categories and scroll down to EditGoTo. Is Ctrl+G still assigned? If not, press that keyboard combination in the "Press new shortcut key" box and then click Assign.

If Word does report that Ctrl+G is still assigned to EditGoTo, then perhaps something at a higher level is intercepting the command. Can you still use F5 for Go To?

This suggests some unscrupulous add-in may be breaking the normal EditGoTo function. Test with Word in Safe Mode to see if this is the problem.

    From Start>Run (Winkey+R), type in

    winword /a

and press enter. Word will start in Safe Mode. Now open a document and test the Ctrl+G and F5 functions now. If it works, you need to find out which add-in is causing the problem.

See this FAQ for how to identify add-ins: http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm
