I just updated to 2010 Office. I have some links between excel and word and they no longer will update automatically even though I have it set to. The old version was 2003. What can I do to get them to auto update. I have to now right click and select update for anything to update.

  • In Word, try hovering the mousepointer over the linked spreadsheet table,
  • right click,
  • select "Link macro enabled Worksheet Object" ,
  • select Links ... , to display the Links dialog.
  • Check that the "Update Method for selected link" is set to "Automatic Update"

    There is a much simpler and faster way for most documents:

    1. Open the document
    2. Press Alt-F9 to expose the field codes, which will look something like

    {LINK Excel.Sheet.12 "C:\Users\Usename\Documents\SomePath\ExcelWorkbook.xlsx" "Sheet1!R1C1:R2C2" \a \p }

    1. Use Find/Repalce to update however much of the path & name needs changing
    2. Press Alt-F9 to hide the field codes
    3. Press Ctrl-A, F9 to update the links.

    If the new files have the same relative path as the old ones (e.g. they're saved in a single folder), you can use

    the macro solution I've posted at:
