It's possible that the font you are using doesn't contain this character (Latin small letter o with macron); in this case I would expect Word to substitute a character in another font.
To confirm this, however, use Insert | Symbol to browse for U014D in the Latin Extended-A character subset. As Hans says, you can then select it and click to insert it.
If you will be using the character frequently, you may want to assign a keyboard shortcut. You can do this by clicking the Shortcut Key... button and then typing the desired shortcut in the box. I would suggest Ctrl+-, o (that is, Ctrl and Hyphen at the same time, followed by lowercase o).
This didn't work. It just typed 014d.
I would try finding the character on the Web and copying and pasting it into Word. That has worked for me plenty of times.
Select Insert | Symbol...
Select "Unicode (hex)" from the "From" dropdown.
Scroll down until you see the character that you want.
Select it and click Insert.
