Create a character with a bar over it

I often need to write about statistics where the symbol for average value is written as an x with a bar above it.

This special character is not in any font, but I just learned how to create it in Word by means of a field that combines the two characters ¯ and x.

Can I do something similar in PowerPoint - and if not, is there another solution?

By coincidence I looked in the Excel forum and here was an answer.

The font is MS Reference Sans Serif and the Unicode is F7C4

    I just noticed this too:

Put the cursor to the right of the character you want to modify

    Choose Insert | Symbol

Next to Subset, choose Combining Diacritical Marks  (if it's grayed out or not there, try different fonts until you find one that is)

You want an X with a tllde over it?  You got it.  There's also a macron character, not a full overbar but possibly close enough.

    Insert a text box.

Click on Insert -> equation (pi symbol) -> Accent -> Bar symbol.

A gray box with an overbar would appear in the text box.

Finally, type x in the gray box.

    Try this:

    1. On the INSERT tab, click SYMBOL.
    2. In the FONT list of the SYMBOL dialog box, click MS Reference Sans Serif.
    3. Scroll down to about 6 rows from the bottom. You should find 3 x-bar characters.

(You'll also find c-bar and p-bar if you need them.) 4. Click one and then click INSERT.

Did that work for anyone else?

Not as simple as in Word. I found the easiest way was to create an image in a paint program using the same font as used in the presentation, save and then insert/scale the image when needed. You can do this in PowerPoint, but it is very time consuming and combersome.
