In that case you will not be able to open Word 2007/2010 files. If you don't need to edit the files but just need to read them, there is a Word viewer available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&displaylang=en. It will allow you to view, print, and copy Word documents, including the latest versions.

By "word 8" do you mean Word 97 (version 8.0) or Word 2008 (a Mac version)? That is the first question that needs to be answered.

If you are actually using Word 97, then you will not be able to use the Office 2007/2010 Compatibility Pack because it applies only to Word 2000 and above.

If you are using Word 2008, then you should post at http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Word/ rather than here. Also, if the file actually is corrupt, it is likely that Word 2008 (like comparable Windows versions) has an Open and Repair option (click the arrow beside Open in the Open dialog and choose Open and Repair).

All this assumes that what you are trying to open is actually a Word document. If it is another file format, then you may not be able to open it in Word. Word can open some versions of Works word processor and WordPerfect documents, but it cannot open PDFs; for those you need to use Adobe Reader.

What exactly are you trying to open? Does this apply to all documents or just some? Do you have the Office 2007 compatibility pack installed?
