How to start page numbers in footer and custom header on 5th page in Word?

I have a Word document that is about 100 pages long.

I'd like to start the page number in the footer and a custom header on the 5th page of the document. How?

It's easy to have the 1st page without the header and footer, but to just start having a header and footer on the 5th page doesn't seem to work.

I tried putting in a next page break, but when I do that it doesn't seem to work either.

Any help would be great!

Click at the end of the 4th page.

Activate the Page Layout tab of the ribbon.

Click Breaks and select Next Page under Section Breaks.

Go into the header of the second section (on page 5) and click the Link to Previous button to turn it off.

Do the same for the footer.

Click Page Number | Format Page Numbers...

Specify that the page number (for the second section) starts again at 1, then click OK.

You can now set the header and footer of the first and second sections independently of each other.

Did you still have the page setup set to First Page Different? If so, you should turn that off.

Did you still have a page break after page 4? If so, you should remove it. It is probably easiest to see the breaks by switching to Draft view and to turn on the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Home tab of the ribbon.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it didn't seem to work.

    Here's what happened:

    1. The document had page numbers starting on page 2. So I went into the footer and deleted those. Did the same for the header.
    2. I then wen to the bottom of page 4 and inserted the Next Page section break. For some reason that made page 5 blank and pushed the content from page 5 to page 6.
    3. I followed the steps you mentioned to un-link previous to both the header and footer.
    4. Then on the blank page 5 I set the format page number to start at 1. It showed 1 in the footer. For some reason, page 6 and onwards still have no footer page number.
    5. I then went to page 6, opened the footer and inserted a page number. It showed page 2 - which is correct. BUT, for some reason now the actual 1 to 4th pages of the Word file also have page numbers in their footer starting from 1. If I remove those, the footers in page 6 onwards disappear.

    What do you suggest?
