Original title: What is a point?

I was trying to formatt the width and hieght of my columns and rows and it would only let me set measures in points and I was wondering what is the conversion of points to inches I just don't understad

    Height is measured in points (72 points to the inch) Width is measured in points (12 points to the inch)   To make a chess board with 1 inch squares, select the entire worksheet and set all the row heights to 72 and column widths to 12

    In my experimentation, printing gridlines and measuring printed results with two different rulers (not measuring tapes, which eventually stretch), I came up with these numbers using Excel 2010 on Windows 7 Enterprise:

    12.43 points wide = 1"

    74.5 points in height = 1"
