How do you create multiple different HEADERS in one document?  Example:  Header for pages 1-80 is Moby Dick Part I

pages 81-156 Header is The Attack Part II

pages 157-216 Header is The Incursion Part III

and so on....

The problem is everytime I try to create Part II in the Header it changes Part I to what Part II Header is titled!!

You have to insert a section break (Page Layout > Breaks > Next Page). Then open the header area in section 2, which makes the Header & Footer Tools tab appear on the ribbon. Click the Link to Previous button on that tab to turn it off, so the "Same as Previous" tag disappears from the header area. Now you can insert what you want in the section 2 header and it won't affect what's in the section 1 header.

    Jay,

I'm sure this caught you when you were distracted. While a new section is an answer to the question as asked: How do I create a new header, it is not a solution to the problem presented. The problem presented is addressed by using the StyleRef Field. I think you may be the one who taught me this.

I don't think there is any other part of Word that people find as frustrating as headers and footers.

Jay is correct of course.  If you want different headers OR footers between chunks of a document, they MUST be separated by a section break.

"Whether I'm in "go to header" or "go to footer" and click on "different first page" it will automatically change the other to the same option. It won't let me select opposite options for header and footer."

Yes, it will always change the other because they can NOT be different.  If a section has different first page, then that different first page applies to BOTH header and footer in that section.  You can NOT have separate options.

    So.

    Set Different first page.

    Put in your header.

    Put in your footer.

Make Link to Previous OFF for the other header, and remove the header content from the other header.

Make Link to Previous ON for the other footer.

The header will show on first page, but not the other pages.

The footer will show on all pages.

It is also a good idea to put in your section breaks first, then do any corrections (Link to Previous and the content) working from the first section onwards.  If you do not know what you are doing trying to work back and forth jumping from sections can get VERY frustrating.

Jay I have read through all of your responses and none of them are working for me. I'm updating word documents. I only need the header on the first page and I need the footers to be the same. The document were already created when I started working here so some documents have section and/or page breaks. My problem is I need to update information in the footer but I have to change it on the first page and the second page for the footer on all pages to match. Sometimes the "link to Previous" button works and sometimes it doesn't. Mostly doesn't.

Whether I'm in "go to header" or "go to footer" and click on "different first page" it will automatically change the other to the same option. It won't let me select opposite options for header and footer.

    I'm extrememly frustrated right now!
