Problems formatting title and paragraph separately, center title and left justify paragraph

Original title: Using Word 2010

I am working on my resume, centering titles over a paragraph of text.  When I highlight the title and use contol e the program centers the title and the text.  I then highlight the text and select the alignment to justify it to the left - then the title becomes left justified as well.  I go round and round trying to get titles centered and text left justified - I didn't have this issue with Word 2007.  What am I doing wrong with Word 2010?

It sounds like the title and the text are part of the same paragraph. That could happen if you pressed Shift+Enter instead of Enter at the end of the title.

Click the ¶ button or press Ctrl+Shift+8 to display nonprinting characters. There should be a ¶ symbol at the end of the title. If instead there is a left-pointing arrow, delete it and press Enter there.

If both the title and the text are in the same paragraph you will have to make use of tab stops to align them differently.

On the other hand, if you are saying that you are changing one paragraph and the other is being automatically reformatted, take a look at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm .

Make sure the styles have not been set to update automatically.

For what it's worth, there is a quicker way to display the Styles pane: Click Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S.

Can't think of direct cause ...

Are you using different styles, or just applying formatting to the "normal" style for both?

Home tab > Styles group > click on the Styles Dialog laucher (the absurdly itsy bitsy teeny tiny stupid little "button" on the right end of the group name, anyone get the impression I don't like that design choice. Personally the little I've seen of the Mac implementation of the Ribbon is MUCH better than the second generation ribbon in 2010!). At the bottom of the Styles Pane, there are 3 buttons, click on the middle one the "Style Inspector". At the bottom of that dialog, again there are 3 buttons. Click on the Left one, "Reveal Formatting. The Reveal Formatting pane displays.

Move the cursor alternately between the 2 paragraphs, you might see what the link between the 2 styles is ...
