The old “PHOTOED” from office 97, I have used this program for many years on a number of operating systems with no trouble. Recently it stopped working error message is “no file format information can be found in registry” I have tried changing the user permissions to full control (shared tools), but still not working. Other programs that edit JPEG files work fine. Checked registry all seems well, one day it worked the next day it just stopped. Operation system is XP.sp3, the only change made to system was I uninstalled MS-Works ( shipped with computer ) I use Office so I uninstalled it (not needed). PHOTOED works fine on other computers (Vista) can anyone help I love this program and do most of my retouch work on this computer.

I have also tried to copy .flt files from install disk as outlined here on a like post on this error, but did not work, also have checked hotfix and other installed KB's. not the problem as far as I can see.  Reinstalling MS-Works not a solution(will require a full system restore).

Thank you Volunteer J,  Looks like I may-be onto something.  I do not wish to give up on this program due to it's value to me.  It seems that something was removed by the MS-Works uninstall:

    Image File Execution Options\mxdwdui.DLL

NAME NOT FOUND Desired Access: Read

I will need to look into this to see if it's the reason "mxdwdui" is a dymic. linked libr. (DLL)   that seems to handle image files it could well be the reason.  Hopefully I can find a copy of it.

Thanks Nayana for your suggestion, but I have tried this step already it did not work.  Something happened when I uninstalled MS-Works from computer other programs that edit JPG's, PNG's etc. work fine it's only Photoed.exe that is now disabled.  Have checked KB's as well, but nothing was installed that could have changed this.

I had used Photoed that day and it worked fine, later after I uninstalled MS-Works it stopped working.  No other changes occurred on computer.

Thanks Volunteer J, That was my first step, but it did not correct the error.  I'am sure it's something to do with the uninstall of MS-Works.  I also tried uninstalling Photoed.exe and reinstalling it, but that did not correct the error.

Here's a highly useful program that has worked with no updates from 1997 going by the way-side due to not being part of microsoft's "core" applications.  I think I'm going to wait on updating to System-7, Vista was bad, but I at least had backward compatibilty on older programs I use.  I will keep trying this program is to useful to me to give up on it.

    Thanks again.....Ron G

Doing a System Restore in Safe Mode to a time

before MS-Works was uninstalled might be worth

    a try.
