Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0.2.3 worked perfectly for years but recently (last few weeks) will no longer open jpeg or gif files. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Photo Editor twice. It gives the following error: "PHOTOED.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created." I can open the jpeg and gif files with Paint Shop Pro, but I want to use Photo Editor. PLEASE HELP! Could a recent Microsoft update (hotfix) be the problem?

I fixed the issues by copying JPEGIM32.FLT from the Office XP installation disk to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt. The issues start from an update in November 2010. For more information:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2479871/en-us.

Yes, my O/S is Windows 2000, too. And like your PHOTOED.EXE, mine will start but not open files. I can't make head or tail out of the Event Log, so I decided to give up on Photo Editor (at least, for the time being) and download a different image viewer-editor: IrfanView. You can get it from its own website or from cnet -- free. I'm tired of struggling with the nonsolutions of Microsoft.

After what you said, I'm pretty sure that the last MS update is my system's problem. Otherwise, my system has not been changed.

My situation is a little different, but similar enough to comment on I think.

I have Windows XP operating system and Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0.2.3.  My photo editor will still open most photos, but every once in a while I find one it won't open.  It will open with other viewers, but not Photo Editor.  "ERROR READING FILE" is the message I get.  It started after applying windows updates.  I confirmed it by testing other work stations before and after applying the update and it is definately the issue.  Peculiar that it only affects some files for me, a very small percentage.

It is a problem for me because I use Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0 Photo as the OLE Object type in an Access XP database.  I have a program that automatically loads between 100-150 photo's per day into a database.  They are pictures for parts that we are going to print a job card for that day.  We have over 10000 photo's on the network that could be pulled into the DB.  When we run into a file that won't load the automated process stops and I have to finish manually.  We've been using this process successfully for several years.  Within the last couple of weeks since the lastest update was applied to my machine I've had 5 or 6 files fail.

A solution to this would be very helpful.

    Thanks,

    Brian

I just started having the exact same problem with Windows 2000 O/S (fully updated). After 9 years, PHOTOED.EXE 3.0.2.3 will now start but it will no longer open any jpg files. There is not any entry in the Event Log. It is possible that I have not used PHOTOED.EXE since the last update Tuesday December 14th.

Which Windows operating system do you use?

Did you do any software or hardware changes to your Computer before this issue started?

Provide the complete error using the event viewer log file
