heading 5 numbering now not in sync with heading 4

All of  a sudden, my heading 5 numbering not in sync with heading 4.

Example: In chapter 4, heading 4 is 4.3.1.1  where I want to insert my first heading 5.

But heading 5 there starts with 1.1.1.1.1

I tried reading Ms Kelly's article, and searching the web, but I cannot make out what is wrong.

That happened after I had to import some content without stripping the formatting from it.  Immediately some of my styles began to malfunction.

Thanks for any help.

best,

Paul

Thanks.

This is working now.  The last missing piece seemed to be that I noticed that, for level 5/heading 5, the Link Level to Style box was empty.

It used to say Heading 5, just the other day.

So, when I picked Heading 5 again in the Link Level to Style box , everything worked.

Folks, I appreciate all your help.

Thanks very much. Go raibh mile maith agaibh.

best,

Paul

"Include level number from" is only for the higher levels. "Number style for this level" gives you the number for the current level. And you won't see 1.2.3.4.5 unless you have temporarily changed the start number of all the levels as suggested. If you leave them all at 1, then you'll see 1.1.1.1.1.

But note that you should get that automatically if you select the built-in multilevel list that shows 1 Heading 1, 1.1 Heading 2, 1.1.1 Heading 3. Everything will be set up properly, with each level linked to its corresponding heading. You can modify the indents as desired, but you shouldn't have to modify the numbering.

Yes, Word numbering often gets "confused".

First thing to try is simply  reapplying the heading style. Apply the "normal" style to the offending heading, then reapply the required heading style.

If that doesn't work, try using find and replace to find the heading style (no text) and to reapply the same style, do a "replace all".

If that doesn't work, go into the "modify style" option for the  problem style. Check to see if the "Automatically Update" option is turned on. If it is, the simplest way to "fix" the style is to reset it back to normal. At the bottom of the Styles pane there are 3 buttons. Click on the 3rd from the left, "Manage Styles". At the bottom of the "Manage Styles" dialog click on the "Import/Export" button. In the Organizer, select all of the styles in the right hand pane then click on the 'COPY" button to copy them back into the current document.

I think I have it set up right.

    Control Q did nothing.

Here are 2 screen shots of what it looks like:

In the Define New Multilevel List dialog, select Level 5 and make sure that the number format includes fields for the previous levels and not just plain text or the current level repeated five times. Also make sure that this level is linked to Heading 5 and set to restart numbering after a higher-level paragraph.

You may find that, provided the correct style is applied, just pressing Ctrl+Q in the paragraph will sort it.
