This typically happens when you download a PPTX file using Internet Explorer version 7 and above. It mistakenly downloads the file as a ZIP file instead of PPTX. When downloading such a file with such a browser, be sure to manually change the extension to "PPTX".

Having said that, with any PPTX, you can "unzip" it, but there's no real value in doing so. A PPTX file is the new format which technically is a zipped file of folders and files. But for your purposes, you should be able to simply open a PPTX file in PowerPoint without any unzipping.

Also, besides the fix above, you can 1) use a different browser or a pre-version 7 IE browser, or 2) have your network admins update the MIME definitions on the server from where you downloaded the file. (Have them read this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms775148%28v=VS.85%29.aspx.)

In addition to the good information Mel posted, if you opt to just change the file extension manually to PPTX, you will probably need to change your Windows settings to allow you to see the file extensions.

    http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00781.htm explains how.

    1. Why can't you save the file? Even attachements "downloaded" in emails can be saved manually from the email into a folder of your choosing. (Get it out of the email into a folder and then work with it.)
    2. Once downloaded into a folder, why can't you change the extension? Can you even see the extension once it's in a folder?

With extensions disabled, does the download dialog box itself show the extension? If so, they can change ".zip" to ".ppax" or ".ppam" right there and be done with it. That's how I have my users doing it and I haven't heard back about any issues.

Also, another route is they can temporarily turn off the "sniffer" in IE so it can download correctly, and then turn it back on later. It's in Internet Options under Security > Custom Levels > Misc > Open files based on content not extension. Change that to Disable. Then change it back after the download.
