Error Code 101590. Looking into forums it was suggested that I save the document in a different file format. How do I save the file in a different file format if I cannot open the file?

Excel error code 101590 appears when I try to open a very important excel document. Looking into forums it was suggested that I save the document in a different file format.

"Excel cannot open the file 'Water use 2011 April-December.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

I use Excel 2007 but the file started displaying this message after someone else had used the document in my absence.

Any ideas?

Try downloading the free Libre Office and seeing if that will open it. (I've known quite a few instances of Libre Office opening files that MS Office thought were corrupted ...)
