what program do I need to open a csv file?

I need to put a csv file on a spreadsheet and don't know what program I need. I had Office Home and Student 2007, but I guess it is only good for a year. I only need the spreadsheet to keep track of prices, weights, size, etc. I have the csv file downloaded on the computer. When I try to open it with a program, open office is the only thing that comes up. I can't seem to get anywhere with that. By now you know I don't know anything about these programs. All I need is what it takes to get the file on a spreadsheet. When I finished writing this I had to fill out what forum, Office version, Microsoft Excel and I have windows 7. If you can help me, just please let me know what I need and what I need to do. I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you

Jack

If you do not want to buy Microsoft Office you could try Oppen Office or Libre Office, or the Google Docs software. Just Google with phases like "open Office" to find download sites. best wishes

Hi Jack

Excel will open a CSV file.

From excel in the open menu, you should be able to select csv file.

I'm using XL2003 so I can't directly help you because we don't have the same menu.

    Hi

a csv file IS NOT a xl file type. It  is just a text file with an extension csv for Comma Separated Value.

Change the extension to ".txt" and back to ".csv" as apropriate.

CSV Files are usuallally generated by other program (output file IS a text file) and are WRONGLY associate with XL.

I have Excel on trial right now and it works fine. I didn't want to buy it if there was another solution.

I had anothe reply and it mentioned Open Office. it works but unless I'm doing something wrong it is in a small box. It works but is not as good as Excel. I did purchase Excel.I was able to buy it without buying Office Home and Student. I just need it to keep track of my wholesalers supplies. I know they have tutorials on spreadsheets but all I need to do is mainly keep track of the price and the amount of his products. I appreciate the quick reply.

    Thanks

    Jack

    Hi again,

As a CSV is a text file, you should follow Bernard Liengme advice and look into open office IF you do not have XL installed.
