If the computer has Windows 10 then most computers can be upgraded to Windows 11 in a supported or unsupported fashion.
If the computer has Windows 7 or 8.1 then it cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 without first upgrading to Windows 10.
Once the computer has Windows 10 and an update is performed the licensing data is entered into Microsoft servers.
Once licensing data is within the servers a clean install or disk drive replacement can be performed using a local or Microsoft account.
Files should not get lost.
It is always best to make free or pay backup images using third party software:
(Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Macrium, Paragon, etc.)
There is a default ten day go back period.
This default ten day period can be modified to sixty days before the ten day expiration.
Once the windows.old is deleted the only option to return to Windows 10 is to clean install.
Again, backup images allow an unlimited test drive period as a backup image can be restored to the time in which the image was made.
