I have a new laptop running Windows 7.  When I installed my MS Office 2003 I found out that I am unable to open Office files that have been sent to me through Lotus Notes.  I have forwarded the same files to my hotmail account and I am able to open them fine.  I have the current Office updates as well as the converter pack.  The error message that I get when I try to open the file is as follows;

"There was a problem sending the command to the program"

In addition to this when I try to save the file to my computer it appears to save but when I look for it in the place I saved it, it is not there.

Any help would be apprciated

You probably just need to add the webmail server site as a “Trusted Site” in the Internet Explorer security options.

With Windows 7, do the following steps in Internet Explorer 8:

    1. From “Tools” menu, select “Internet Options”.
    2. On the “Security” tab, click “Trusted site” in the “Select a zone to view or change security settings.” panel.
    3. Click the “Sites” button.
    4. Under the “Add this website to the zone:”, enter the URL for the web mail site and click the “Add” button.
    5. If the URL starts with HTTP instead of HTTPS, make sure that the “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” check box is cleared.
    6. Press the “Close” button.
    7. Press the “OK” button.

    (thanx to Chris)

I checked Excel and it is not running in compatibility mode.  I also removed Office with the fixit tool and removed the converter pack as well.  I reinstalled Office and I am still getting the exact same problem.  I also started moving in the direction of my company's Helpdesk since the problems seems only to be happening with Lotus Notes.  They gave up rather quickly.  Note that I did not reinstall the compatibility pack this time.

    Thanks,

    Brandt

Ensure Excel is not running in compatibility mode:

    Click on Start > Computer > C-Drive (C :) > Program Files or Program Files (X86) > Microsoft Office > Office11

Locate the Excel icon, then do a right-click on it and select ‘Properties’

Select the ‘Compatibility’ tab then uncheck the ‘Run this program in Compatible mode for’ option

Click on Apply and then select OK

If the issue persists, try removing and re-installing the Office 2003 as well as the   Office compatibility pack. This will correct the file type association.

You may use the   Microsoft Fixit tool   to uninstall the Office 2003.

Now check if the issue occurs.

All of this is taking place on the same computer.  I have logged onto my company email through lotus notes and an email was sent to me that had a MS Excel attachment.  I tried clicking on it so it would open but I received the error message stated above.  I then tried to save it to my computer and the progress window opens as if it is saving.  When I go look for it the file is not there.  I then looked for another email that was sent to me with a Word doc and the same thing happened.  So up to this point I have checked Word and Excel files that are having this problem.  I actually forwarded the same email's that were sent to me in lotus notes over to my hotmail account and I was able to open both Word and Excel without problems.  I was also able to save them to my computer.  It sounds like something between Office and Lotus Notes. I just tried to open a PDF file and I was able to open it in the Lotus Notes. I did try to save the PDF file from the Lotus email but the same thing is happening where it appears to be saving but I can't find the file in the place I saved it.

Just to clarify I am using Lotus iNotes (Webmail)

    Thanks,

    Brandt

What is the type of file you are trying to open in Outlook?

Does it happen with any specific type of attachments only?

You mentioned that you were able to open the attachment from Hotmail, was it on the same computer?

Save the file locally on desktop and try to open it.
