Help Please!!!

I'm using MS Project 2010 - I've created a project showing weekend days as working time.  I have a task within a subtask that is showing the correct time of 100 days, but the task line it's under states 157.38 days, and the dates are equal???  Can you provide an explanation for why this is doing this?

Thank you!!!

your issue is that your tasks are currently 'manually scheduled.' you need to do two things:

    1. File tab > Options > Schedule > Change the New Tasks Created field to 'Auto Schedule'
    2. Manually change each task in your existing schedule to Auto Schedule. Right click on each task and select Auto Schedule from the right click menu.

that solved this issue for me. good luck and let me know if that is the issue. i don't remember having to do this in 2003, must be new in 2010.

    Trish,

Let me expand on what Jan stated. One possibility is that the calendar you have defined for the overall project (Project/Project Information) differs from either the task calendar (Task/Information/Advanced tab) or the resource calendar. One easy way to tell is to add the Task Calendar field as a column in the Gantt Chart view. If the entry therein is "none" for both the summary task and the performance task (task and subtask as you like to call them), then the calendar exceptions for the summary and task follow whatever you set up under Project/Change Working time. Now go to View/Resource Sheet and select the resource assigned to the task. Then go to Project/Change Working Time. What is the calendar shown for that resource? If it is different from the task or project calendar, then the Duration shown on the Gantt Chart view for the summary line and the task line will be different even though the Work, Start and Finish fields will all display the same data.

So no, we still don't have a clear image of the problem you are seeing but based on what you have told us, different working time calendars might be the cause.

    Hi,

Duration is always counted using the applicable calendar.

For taks without resources attached and without summary tasks, this is the project calendar. For a task with a resource attached this is the resource calendar. So it is quite normal that tasks with identical start and finish show different values for duration if they have different applicable calendars. So both values are "correct"!

    Greetings,

    Hi John -

Thanks for your response, please let me make myself a little more clear.

    • I was able to make the weekend days as working time, by going into the project ribbon, change working time button, work weeks, details, select Saturday & Sunday and set them to the specific working time.
    • The subtask and Task are the ones that are not matching although they have the same duration associated with them

I appreciate your time and advice!!  Does this help to give you a clear image of my problem?

    Thanks! Trish

    Tlalim,

No, not without more information. How exactly did you set up weekend days as working time? When you say, "...task within a subtask...", do you mean that the "task" is a summary line and the "subtask" is a performance task, (i.e. task with assigned resources), or something else? Are there any other performance tasks under the summary line?

    John
