If Shift 3 produces £ you have Windows configured to use a UK pattern keyboard. Change that in Windows regional settings to a US keyboard.

Thank you for your answer, while that fixed the problem generally, in the specific document that I am working on the change did not take place even after restarting my computer as directed. Then I remembered that I had changed the default dictionary from English US to English UK in this document as I was getting words underlined as I typed, these were standard words which would be found in the dictionary so I changed to English UK and the problem went away. So I went back into the document and found  under options/ language I had set the UK keyboard as the default, so I applied the same fix and that fixed that  document also.

Sorry about the delay in acknowledgement for your assistance, however your help was truely appreciated in getting to grips with the problem. BarryK
