How do I place a header with my last name and page number, that will post, and update the page, to every page?

I need to place a header on each page that has my last name and the page number but I can't seem to figure out how to do this. It's for a research paper and must go in the top right side of each paper. I can get it to list it on the first page but not each additional page.

Have you tried inserting page Number (shows # symbol) then click the number which shows a frame

Next move cursor to right of number and type Jones (1st example) then click on frame and move mouse pointer the center dot on right side .

It will change to a double arrow pull to right to expand frame until everything is on one line.

Now while frame is selected go to the Formatting toolbar and click Center.

    Example 2  add page.

Example 3 Add Page beside of  the Page number but after name

Example 4 after inserting page number hit tab until you get to Right side Type Jones

Example 5 after inserting Page number Type Jones at left margin.

    example:

Jones #           would show as Jones 1 http://www.screencast.com/t/yz82ZQOI

Jones Page #  would show Jones Page 1 http://www.screencast.com/t/TTza86pW

Or you center the Page  and Justify Right as follows:

                            Page 1                                    Jones http://www.screencast.com/t/Qxnzp3ThXaGw

Or you could Type Jones first then Tab center

    Jones                Page1http://www.screencast.com/t/GxJKSibq5tLb

In the main menu bar, go to Format > Document, click on the second tab, Layout, and make sure "Different first page" is not selected. In addition, make sure you skip from page to page by inserting a page break (Insert > Break > Page Break) and not a Section Break, which would give you several headers.

There is a complete and illustrated explanation in Word's own Help:

    • In the main menu bar, select Help and type Header
    • In the list that appears, choose "Use headers and footers"
    • There you will also see a link at the bottom, "Add elements that repeat on every page," that will come handy, although you've already done that step.
