How do I put an accent mark above a letter in a word? For example, the word 'nee' that is used to mean "born as" in wedding announcements?

In this particular example: Ctrl+' (apostrophe) followed by e will insert é.

You can also turn on NumLock and press Alt+130 (using the digits on the numeric keypad).

For others: on the Insert tab of the ribbon, click Symbol > More Symbols...

Make sure that (normal text) is selected in the Font dropdown.

Scroll up or down until you see the accented letter that you want and select it.

You'll see the keyboard shortcut near the bottom of the dialog.

Click Insert to insert the character into the document.

You can use keyboard shortcuts that include these keys to produce accented letters. See http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/InsertSpecChars.htm for a list of these shortcuts.

On U.S. keyboards, either ALT key works. NumLock must be enabled, and it makes a difference whether you use Alt+130 or Alt+0130. In neither case do I get a question mark.

I use Microsoft Word 2010 with Windows 7.   I am able to assign shortcut keys to many diacritical marks I use regularly.  But for the character 'Combining Acute Accent' and 'Combining Dot Below' the short cut keys I assign work only for the character 'a'.  They don't work for any other character.  I am able to get the marks I need (using 0301 Alt-X and 0323 Alt-X respectively for these two marks), but I am not able to assign a short cut key to them.  Is this a bug?

I tried it in Word 2010 SP1 on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.

I could assign shortcut keys to Unicode characters 0301 and 0323 hexadecimal without problems.

The shortcut keys correctly insert the acute accent and dot below.
