I want to use a different symbol for each number in a list.  How do I customize numbering? I know you can customize bullets, but I want to customize the numbers so a custom symbol comes up for each number.

    John,

What you are asking is not possible in PowerPoint, or to my knowledge, any Office product.

PowerPoint offers a few numbering styles but does not provide control to define a new number format like Word does (if that is what you're thinking about).

    Mel,

Word does not allow you to replace symbols for numbers. It does have a larger list of alternative number sequences to choose from versus PowerPoint, but the list is finite.

The numbered tab does not allow customization so this doesn't address my objective.

    Hi JohnKinney

To customize nubmering : Right click on slide and click on Bullets and Nubmering.  You will have 2 tabs - Bulleted & Numbered .  Here you can customize it the way you would like
