Dates before 1900 in MS Project

I would like to use Microsoft Project (2010) to create a Gantt chart for historic events. Some of these events happened before 1900.

I have an add-in that can fix this for Excel, but I don't know how to do this in MS Project.

I know there are Gantt chart templates available in Excel, but I want to make my information more dynamic. A "project schedule" type format would suit my needs perfectly, whereas excel would be pretty difficult. Relationships between events and such are easy to define in a project scheduler, and very tough in Excel.

Is there any way to do this?

Thanks

Susan

Hello Susan,

Sorry, no.  Microsoft Project's date range is from 1984 through 2049.  However, that being said, you may be able to use Project to create the Gantt chart -- just change the date display in the Gantt chart to and also alter the default date format to show only Month and Day -- omit year.

I hope this helps.

Julie

Thank you for your reply, but I am greatly disappointed in hearing this.

Faking it by not using years will not work for multi-year projects. Think the Civil War. It's really not possible to show just month and day.

There should be an option in MS Project (*all* MS products, really) to allow for dates prior to 1984 (or 1901 in Excel). We can do SO much with the products if they weren't so limited. There's SO much in history that we could model using these products!!!

    perhaps one day......

You're welcome for the reply -- sorry it wasn't what you wanted to hear.

I understand your comment -- but I tend to disagree about the usage of Project.  If I want to timeline something (the Civil War in your example), I'm more inclined to use Visio or perhaps PowerPoint.  To me, Project is not a tool to record history, but to plan the future :-)

    Good luck.
