It did work, because a hyperlink is a field that Word already highlights in blue (not gray).

I am typing a dissertation for someone and there are 15 pages of references at the back. When I select all of the references and try to sort alphabetically, Word is telling me it can't sort the fields. PLEASE HELP!!! This is too time consuming. What could I possibly be doing wrong? There are too many references to try and do this manually.

That is because you selection is including a field—not a Sort Field, but a Word field, like a TOC.
Make fields visible to see who the intruder is: Word > Preferences > Show > Field shading: Always will show the fields with a gray highlight.
Well I did that and it didn't work. Someone else told me the hyperlinks in the list were not allowing me to sort. When I removed them I was able to sort alphabetically then but had to go back and put them back in.
Thanks for your efforts.
Thread continues here: Sorting reference list for a dissertation.
I am typing a dissertation for someone and need to alphabetize the list. When I go to tables--sort--paragraphs--text--ascending, I get a message saying Word cannot sort fields in this selection. There are 13 pages of these references and will take forever doing it manually. I used the sort before for a reference list. Why isn't this working?
